At OFL, I rediscovered that spark that I once had for school, and I started to feel good about myself again. The many opportunities for trips is what made me love and be proud of my school. Going to in Rocky Mountain Ranch in Colorado, Blackbird Farm in Northern California, the service learning trip, and the College Tours. When I got back, I applied. And I am proud to say that I am a Portland State fall-bound student. I am going to study psychology and later plan to specialize in helping foster youths like myself. I will be the first in my family to go to college.

During my difficult transition into becoming a new mother, I was really in need of some extra support, love, and care. OFL was always flexible with my doctor’s visits and my school work. I was able to give back to my community by learning to clean up at our local beaches where one day my son would go and play. Currently, I am enrolled to attend Cerritos College. My plan is to attend for two years, then transfer to UC Davis and pursue my dreams of becoming a veterinarian and hopefully open my own practice one day. My dreams are quickly becoming my reality.

OFL provided me a home without a bed. I had snacks when I didn’t have money to buy lunch. I had teachers there for me when I went through rough patches, but most importantly, there wasn’t a space for me to let my depressions or anxiety consume me. I was encouraged to join clubs and attend trips and events. I met amazing people throughout the process. Over time, my relationships with staff and teachers grew and blossomed. Graduates, I hope you take a little of your centers with you and never forget that you always have a home there.
